Give the gift of warmth and safety to homeless veterans with pets.
You can help us build housing in Philadelphia!
In the U.S., more than half a million people are homeless—and nearly 15% are our nation's veterans. Many of our veterans count on their pets as true companions. And while homeless shelters are a key resource for veterans who need food and a safe place to stay, most shelters in our country cannot accommodate animals.
Imagine you're a veteran who has fallen on hard times. You've served your country, but back home you can't afford all necessities, like food, and clothing, and a place to live. You find yourself living on the street with your beloved dog or cat, a pet you consider part of your family. Things are tough, but your true companion gives you comfort and purpose as you work to find employment and get back on your feet.
Every night, you face a bleak, brutal decision: stay with your companion pet outside and brave the cold together, or check into the shelter and leave your pet alone in the dark and cold all night. You fought to keep our country safe, and now there's nowhere safe for you and your pet to go on a cold night.
This is why GreaterGood.org's signature program Safe Haven is headed to Philadelphia, where not a single homeless shelter accepts pets. In partnership with the Student-Run Emergency Unit of Philadelphia, we're building the first housing for homeless veterans that accommodate pets. This housing will be built from the ground up, and we need your help to reach our goal of $70,000 to make this project a reality.
You can help give homeless Veterans with pets a home for the holidays. We believe no pet or veteran should be left behind—or out in the cold. Please give today.
Safe Haven is an initiative of The Jackson Galaxy Project and a GreaterGood.org Signature Program. Safe Haven is committed to providing safety and security to people and their pets seeking shelter. Safe Haven works to retrofit homeless shelters in order to accommodate pets, helping people come in off the street, and helping domestic violence victims leave dangerous situations. Now, Safe Haven is expanding our efforts to build brand new, affordable, and pet-friendly housing.
