Help save the gray whale! Donate today to help untangle breeding gray whales caught in fishing lines!.
Each winter, hundreds of gray whales migrate from the Arctic to Laguna San Ignacio in Baja California, Mexico to give birth to their calves and mate for the following year. This lagoon is an essential habitat for the survival of the 400 or more gray whale calves that are born each winter. However, these gray whales are in danger. Whales easily become entangled in fishing lines and gear, making their historic breeding ground unsafe.
Greatergood.org partners with The Ocean Foundation to provide safe breeding grounds for whales. Through their program The Laguna San Ignacio Ecosystem Science, they work to ensure that gray whales have a safe breeding ground by untangling whales from fishing lines and gear. LSIESP also documents the number and distribution of whales, whale-watchers, and fishing boats that visit the lagoon each winter. The Ocean Foundation also provides opportunities to educate, train and guide future generations of wildlife biologists and managers.
